Why do Christians fear their own god?

I find it ironic that their merciful god is the also on par in malevolent acts as Satan. Seems more like the Christian god is a demon of some kind. Shouldn't the all powerful guide be merciful and guide us? Instead of keenly waiting until he can throw everyone into a pit of fire save 10 people?
