How to clean virus without formatting the computer?

My computer got virus. While browsing the web automatically Help pages will pop-up. If i browse in Firefox, Firefox help pages will pop-up continuously. Folder names automatically renamed with multiple tildes (~) following 5 and 6 numerals. I have tried few anti virus software but no use. I can not afford for a licensed anti virus software. Please help.
